How Much Should You Spend on a Small Appliance?

Small appliances are dangerously easy to buy. A coffee maker, blender, air fryer, or vacuum may not look expensive on its own. But a kitchen full of gadgets quickly adds up, and every one of them needs somewhere to live.

Spending a few hours of work on an appliance you’ll use regularly may feel fair. If it costs a full working day or more, stop and think. How often will you actually use it? Does it replace something you already own? Could a simpler model handle the same job?

Frequency matters more than novelty. A reliable coffee maker used every morning can easily justify a higher price. A specialised gadget pulled from the cupboard once a month may cost far more per use, even if it was cheap.

Cleaning matters too. If a blender takes ten minutes to scrub after making a thirty-second smoothie, there’s a good chance it’ll end up forgotten at the back of a cabinet.

Before buying, include the less obvious costs: filters, capsules, accessories, cleaning supplies, and repairs. Check that you have space for the appliance as well.
